Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

The two latter two are likely to see a boost in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more frequently, but they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter to keep that high level.
Speedy wideouts are the biggest beneficiaries of moving into the slot since they have a much easier time getting open downfield when their route isn't covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a reliable player for intermediate and short routes.
The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers who are better on short and intermediate routes than those in deep areas such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great option to be a sleeper for this season as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved on more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to perform well in short-to-mid routes, since that's what he did well in 2021 when he played for the Bills. He could be an excellent replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews.
Percentage of Snaps in the Slot
The percentage of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot could be a good indicator for their ability to run deep routes. However, it isn't always an accurate representation of a receiver's skill set because some receivers excel in the slot, but cannot play deep, and vice versa.
Alshon Jeffrey, for example is the league leader in goals per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th in the slot that receives scores (58.5). This is because most of his targets have come from the outside, and it's hard to score a first-down on a wide-open, deep route in this setting.
Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He ran 74% of his route in the slot, compared to only 26% of his boundaries routes. This is a significant difference and illustrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.
Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside most of the time on his passes and has one of the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also played 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-one coverage.
Speed receivers are more efficient when they are lined up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.
On the flip side, we've got some great slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able to create pressures during the passing game, with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime packages and then deploying McDuffie on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. In addition, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge asset when playing in the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter however, their slot counterparts are also just as good. As a whole wide receivers who have a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns roughly at the same amount as those who are on the edge. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers rather than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.
It's interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of slot routes than most players listed on this list. This is a great way to create matchup advantages for your team and explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.
He also plays at the X-position and makes huge plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the players in this list, but he's still highly skilled and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys' scheme.
Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of putting up huge numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws, however, he's also a formidable opponent for contested catch.
Another player on this list who's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable member of his team's defensive line. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety who cannot compete with Hilton's speed, size and ability to run routes.
